David Tennant may now be finished playing The Doctor in the popular BBC series "Doctor Who," but he's not quite done with an old companion of his predecessors, Sarah Jane Smith.

Tennant has signed on to appear in two episodes of the popular "Doctor Who" spinoff "Sarah Jane Adventures" playing, well, The Doctor.

"Viewers thought they may have to wait until November for the next full episode of 'Doctor Who,' but this is an extra special treat," said outgoing showrunner Russell T. Davies. "And it's not just a cameo from David. This is a full-on appearance for The Doctor as he and Sarah Jane face their biggest threat ever."

"Sarah Jane" is about to enter its third season, with a plan to run 12 episodes on CBBC. It's the second official spinoff of "Doctor Who," followed by "Torchwood," which is planning to air its shortened third season this summer. While The Doctor has been hinted about on both shows, this will be the first time the character has shown up in any of the spinoffs, although many of the characters from both shows have appeared in "Doctor Who," including the fourth season finale.

"Sarah Jane" returns with new episodes in September, ahead of the planned November special for "Doctor Who." The series stars Elisabeth Sladen, who appeared on "Doctor Who" herself between 1973 and 1976, co-starring with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.

"It's fantastic news that Sarah Jane is going to spend some time working with The Doctor again, and is testament to just how successful this CBBC series is," Sladen told BBC.

Tennant is scheduled to appear in three more specials, including "The Waters of Mars" in November, and a two-part Christmas special that will include a special guest appearance by the new Doctor, Matt Smith.

At the same time, the folks behind "Doctor Who" are planning to do a movie through BBC Films, saying that a script is in development. However, it could be months if not years before such a project is realized, said Lizo Mzimba, an entertainment correspondent with the BBC.
